The TOP 100 Greatest Ever ROCK Frontmen: Joe Strummer.

Greetings, rockers, metalheads, and whatever other sub genre of rock you most associate yourself with! It's Friday, and the weekend is almost here -- I know you've probably got barbecues to burn, and beer to guzzle, but before we all head off for our weekend shenanigans, we've got one more entry to get through first... so, how about a little trip down memory lane -- and a very punk memory lane at that -- because rolling in at #n81 is our final entry of the week, Joe Strummer.

Strummer was a British composer, actor, song-writer, rhythm guitarist and co-lead vocalist, who was most famous for co-founding the heavy punk rock outfit, The Clash. He played a key part in the original wave of '70s British punk rock movement.

Strummer wasn't the most technically competent guitarist, and he was far from being the world's best singer, but it really didn't matter. What you got from The Clash frontman was a passion, energy and total commitment to the cause that very few have been able to match. He was a brash, intense, Elvis-leg-twitching punk-rock superstar, and in his heyday, no one could touch him.

The Clash were the thinking punk's counterpoint to the destructive Sex Pistols, and they pulled that persona largely from their charismatic leader. The band were open-minded enough to eventually play stadiums opening for The Who, and even then, Strummer tried to meet with every fan he could.

Strummer died suddenly on 22 December 2002 in his home at Broomfield in Somerset, the victim of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. He was just 50 years of age. Though his life was cut short, his legacy will live on, and he'll always be known as one of the most important people in the punk rock genre.

So, that's it for this week, folks. I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have. We've got something a little different next week, I've selected four lucky people from this group to do some guest posting for us. So, I'm sure we'll have an interesting and fun week

Be sure to tune in for that, and keep rockin'!
