I'm not sure any of them were actually ground breaking as they play fairly basic rock n roll although Axl got big-headed and tried adding orchestras and shit which was lame-o. Who had a bigger impact? DC by a country mile. AC/DC. When they first appeared they were unique and groundbreaking. GnR just rode on the coattails of the New York Dolls, Hanoi Rocks and Motley Crue. AC/DC never Changed there Sound and that's why they were Successful plus they just Played Good Rock n Roll Music and Evolved through the decade's with keeping the Same Formula.
I like GnR very much, but they're not much more than a one-trick pony - Appetite... AC/DC is a monumentally trailblazing, earth-shifting decades-long, death-defying, *deaf*-defying, blaze of defiantly era-defining, pioneering rock n roll!
Interesting comparison.
Groundbreaking means innovative or pioneering or do something that is different from
what has been known to date .
I still don't get the GnR phenomenon . and don't get me wrong I like the band, but the guys released one great and classic album and they have made a living and fame out of that. I could not say that they made something different that already existed, yes they had the advantage that AC/DC did not had in the 70's which was MTv.
But this is a band that has released only 4 Albums (5 if you count the GnR lies EP) and besides Appetite I couldn't say the other ones had something special.
On the other hand when AC/DC started their Voice, and Guitar Sounds and I believe even their Lyrics and themes were so unique in those days.
Again no hater or disrespect intention , just a perspective of an old Rocker that after 41 years listening to Rock and Heavy music and that still looking for new bands and genres thinks.
Rock on Brothers
